This event at The British Library on Monday 16th November launched Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009. It featured globally recognised figures who shared the opportunities that they have taken and those they believe we must take now to drive the recovery, including:

Hello and welcome

In this first video we have the marvelous opening performance from a band called `Fanfara’ - an 8 piece brass band playing music from the village brass bands of Moldavia and Macedonia. We then have the welcome from the Chair, Simon Jack, BBC Correspondent. Next is the address from the Host, Dame Lynn Brindley, Chair of the British Library. Then there are the opening words from Miles Templeman, Institute of Directors, followed by the GEW 2009 Launch video and an address by Lord Mandelson, First Secretary of State, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills.

Driving a Global Movement of Entrepreneurs

For our second video, we have Carl Schramm, CEO of the Kauffman Foundation with a talk entitled “Driving a Global Movement of Entrepreneurs”, followed by Jim O’Neill, Head of Global Economic research at Goldman Sachs, talking on “The Challenges and Opportunities of Our Times”. Then we have a video from our GEW host in Brazil, Karen Kanaan, on Global Entrepreneurship Week…Brazilian style!

Entrepreneurs and Change

In the third video, we move to the theme of `Entrepreneurs and Change’. Here we have talks by: Matt Brittin, MD, Google UK, talking about “Technology driving change” (and a video clip of the Google history) Emma Harrison, A4E David Wei, CEO, Alibaba.com - China’s biggest internet-business - on “Uncovering entrepreneurial potential worldwide”

The background

Despite the current economic climate, the global economy is still expected to nearly double by 2030. To take advantage of this the UK must continue to encourage its current and prospective entrepreneurs to make the most of their ideas, not least through international connections and the emerging global markets.
