Sheffield College has a strategic commitment to enterprise and employability. We are opening a new Enterprise Gateway office in our City College. The Gateway, staffed by business mentors, is easily accessible to students and staff and will offer advice, guidance and practical help on business startups and all other aspects of enterprise. Our Gateway opening event is timed to fit around both Global Entrepreneurship a City College open evening, thereby attracting a high level of interest.

This event also included promotion of start up loans for young entrepreneurs.

Learners from Derby College will attend the Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham. Held at the NEC Birmingham from 15-17 November, The Skills Show is free to attend and will play host to a range of skills competitions, awards and activities. Visitors will be inspired by skills in action as the best of the nation’s young talent perform at the WorldSkills UK Competitions; they’ll have chance to Have a Go at new skills, get up to the minute careers advice, access Apprenticeships and real job opportunities from employers, to help them make that next important step!

Event: GEW Entrepreneur 'Cafe Style' Workshop

Learners across Derby College have been invited to come along and speak to local Entrepreneurs on Thursday 15th November 2012 for a 'Cafe Style' Workshop. Entrepreneurs and representatives from local businesses will be able to share their enterprising skills and characteristics with learners, and learners will be able to ask questions in an informal atmosphere. Entrepreneurs and reprensentatives from local Businesses include S&A Foods, Cirena Ltd who operate Birchover Hotel Apartments and Bay Tree Apartments in Derby, Oviso, Make a Difference and McAndrew Utilities.

We are launching our enterprise and entrepreneur initiative across all our curriculum areas. The GEW week is acting as a launch pad to secure enterprise is fostered across the whole college.

We are asking for students to come up with ideas for a business which can be set up on line or through an app.

The students will have the opportunity to fill in an idea postcard, upload it through our website or visit our roadshow 'pod' and create a 30 second video.

The ideas will be evaluated and then final (20 students) will be expected to present their idea via a storyboard micro plan.

Event: Y12 Apprentice Challenges

Year 12 Business students will be set 3 Apprentice Challenges across the week. They will be set in teams and the challenges will be set by specified teachers and in secret locations! Students will have to present their ideas in the Boardroom and along with a winning team, there will also be a losing team; whereby someone will be fired!

Event: Maths Enterprise Challenge

12 November 2012 – 15 November 2012 West Midlands

Working in teams as a business, students will start out with an initial investment, which they will have to use to set up a manufacturing company. They will be producing basic 2-D shapes from A4 paper and selling them at a price that the stock market dictates. This price will vary at intervals during the activity. The winning team will be the one who make the biggest profit by the end of the session. Prizes will be given for beat team in each house and for the best team overall.
