Product building challenge

This activity is perfect to get students from different disciplines, working together

With a stock of safe left-over equipment and materials from around the college or university, teams of students could be challenged to build a new product to either get over an obstacle (such as a bridge) or something to transport some equipment (such as a go-kart).

It’s a great way to encourage efficient team-working, planning, design, innovation and safe construction, and is a really good practical exercise for those students who prefer a more ‘hands on’ activity. You could even source some of the materials or individual challenges from local businesses.

Teams could also include students interested in communications so they can put together an advertising pitch. Then the students can pitch in front of a panel of judges about why their product is the best!

Top tip
Invite a journalist from your local paper to act as one of the judges on the panel and you may just get the competition covered in the newspaper!
