Glengowan Primary School 2008 – living locally, learning globally

Glengowan Primary School, receivers of an ‘Awards for All’ grant which funds people to take part in projects that promote education, the environment and health in the local community, really took the global theme of Enterprise Week 2008 and ran with it!
Students had been learning about various aspects of African life and culture throughout the year, with learning enriched by visits from a range of people who shared their experiences of living and working in Africa. The school has been working with Songani Primary School in Malawi, raising money to help them improve their school facilities. Last year, through fundraising activities at Glengowan Primary School, they managed to fund the build of a new brick teaching block.
Inspired by their link with Songani Primary School, they held a ‘Celebrate Africa event’ during Enterprise Week, attended by 600 people. The students themselves develop key enterprise skills through being tasked with a range of activities: designing and sending invites; selling tickets; managing money; greeting people on the day; entertaining guests with traditional African and Scottish dance and singing performances.
Students raised over £2,000 from the day, £1,000 of which they donated to the Songani Primary school. They hope this money will help put a roof on the teaching block they built last year.
