Women in the City 2007

Young women from the four London Young chamber schools attended the ‘Women in the City’ event to celebrate Women’s Enterprise Day on 14 November 2007
Students from years 11-13 received invitations to attend the event hosted by Deborah Jarvis, Operations Director at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at the Little Ship Club, overlooking the Thames. A line up of six women speakers, including, Anne Pritam a City Lawyer, Paula Oparaocha, Women’s Officer in the London Fire Service and Lynette Lachey, a partner with BDO accountants, all with exceptionally successful careers, from a broad range of professions, shared their experiences from school, to where they are today.
Throughout the event a slide show presentation highlighting well known successful women and statistics relating to women in work in London was shown. A workbook was also produced to compliment the speeches and presentation and given to each student which included information on speakers, helpful networking tips and useful links.
A break during the speeches provided an opportunity to network around the room and take part in a networking activity which involved meeting eight new people and asking specific questions.
All the young women, teachers, speakers and guests left the event beaming with inspiration and asking for more similar events.
“London Young Chamber was set up in September 2007. I decided that Enterprise Week would be a great thing to be part of as a way of launching the project. Make Your Mark provided support, publicity and merchandise which made it really easy to organise the Women in the City event and to raise its’ profile. Being part of the Make Your Mark Campaign and putting on a quality event really helped us to do this because every student, teacher and guest saw that they were taking part in something real that could make a difference to the futures of young women. Then they went off and told their friends, families and colleagues about what a great event they had been to with London Young Chamber!” Fiona Rezende, London Young Chamber
“I think it was a really good opportunity to actually have someone from the real world come in and tell you what it’s about.” Participating student
