Strathclyde Students think outside the box 2009

To celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009, students at Strathclyde Enterprise Society ran the ‘Think outside the Box Challenge’ based on an activity featured on the GEWUK website. Entrants were issued with a plastic bottle, post-its, carrier bag and one hour to devise a business idea by adding value to these items. Judges were impressed with the standard of entries, with the split bottle proposal – with two different drinks contained in the same bottle - coming up trumps!
Event organisers, Dawn & Heather, based the event around an activity featured on the GEWUK website. They felt the global angle really helped to attract a high turnout at the event and that students were excited to be part of something global. The event also successfully promoted the Scottish Institute for Enterprise New Ideas Competition with many attendees going on to enter after the event with the chance to win a £1500 cash prize.
The event had great feedback, with many students inspired to start up businesses. ‘I have considered a new business idea and researched its feasibility’, was one attendee’s comment after attending the event. Others really appreciated the opportunity to meet like-minded people saying ’the event gave me a chance to speak with other people who were looking to start a business and this gave me more confidence with my ideas.’
The lucky winner from the event was presented with an award at the University’s biennial Enterprise Awards Dinner attended by many high-profile Scottish entrepreneurs including Shaf Rasul of Dragon’s Den fame.
